Thank you. I saw Poe tonight, in Toledo and was more moved by any stage performance in my life. Many were not, but they do not have their own demons. I am 51 years old and have been a healthcare executive and CEO all my live. I am trying to understand the demons and redefine my life. I do not have an e-mail address because of a recent move, but I will contact you again. I do want to know your future schedules so that I may send my friends to learn from you. Thank you Edgar. I cannot beleive that I missed this play IN MY OWN TOWN! I had a broshure that I kept for 4 months to remind me to and the last week I forgot about it. I am a big fan of both Astin and Poe. Living in Jasper, I don't want to have to drive to Toledo, OHIO to see this play. I have two questions. 1. Will this play tour again with Mr. Astin or Nevermore? 2. Will a video recording of the production be made and available for purchase or Nevermore? Thanks for any information you can give me.

Mr.Astin, My brother and I attended your performance on Sunday Feb 4, in Jasper Indiana. With experience lacking and not having the opportunity to see many stage shows, I still think it safe to say that we experienced an extroardinary performance. We are still discussing the this and thats of Poe's life, with special interest in his work Eureka, which was new to us. My brother is already looking for Poe material. Anyway, Thank you for sharing your talent with us. This performance will certainly go unmatched!!Bravo!!

Dear Mr. Astin, I eagerly awaited Once Upon a Midnight. Having grown up watching you in The Addams Family, along with all your many guest appearances, and in recent years on The Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr., I was anxious to finally see you perform in person. I was not disappointed. On the contrary, I have attended many dramas over the years, but none has even come close to comparing with your performance of Poe's life and works. I've long been a fan of Poe, so this this was a double delight. I was fortunate to be able to share your work with a high school student who is involved in a Poe class project. She was thrilled with the insight you gave her into his life. No amount of reading could have done what you were able to do in about two hours. Please know that your show is awesome and second to none. I hope to be able to see it again someday, to catch the parts that slipped by so quickly. Thank you for a truly incredible evening. (I would also be interested in a video, if available.) Sincerely, P. Anderson, Jasper, Indiana

I had the devine pleasure of attending this play. John Astin glued over 700 people to their seats. Everyone hung on every word Mr. Astin said. He was wonderful! He made Edgar Allan Poe come to life, and I would go to see him again and again given the opportunity. I also was able to meet him after the show. I have met several celebrities in my lifetime, and never one so intelligent and kind. I think he would have sat down and had coffee with us given the time. Thank you John for a wonderful evening we will never forget! Sincerely, Norma

A little less than twelve hours ago I was in Civic Hall in Richmond, Indiana watching John Astin's performance of Once Upon a Midnight. I had been looking forward to it for months, and I have to say that it was well worth the wait. Magnificent is hardly an adequate word to describe the performance. Spellbinding is not strong enough to describe the effect on the audience. My only regret is that I was not able to watch it again. Before I had reached my car I knew that I had just seen something extraordinary but I was unable to recall an entire sentence of any of it. I would like to see it again. I would also hope that at some time in the future the play would be available in book form for those of us with short-term memory lapses.

Dear Mr. ASTIN, you are a childhood favourite of mine from Gomez Addams through to Evil Roy Slade (a family favourite, we still recite lines from the film: "Where's the rest of your hat? You get a hat like everybody else" and "Sneakin, lying, arrogant, dirty & evil" and beyond. I recall that you were in Australia recently and was wondering if you were considering bringing the play to Melbourne. We'd love the play down here, Melbourne is book town. I am bleeding at the thought of missing 'Once upon a midnight', I would dearly love to see it. If it is still in production next year, I might be lucky to see it in the U.S. I'm really stoked to see that you are still working. love you Gomez L.M. Peperkamp

I am very fortunate (1) to have grown up within a few miles of Manhattan and (2) to have a teacher who inspired a love of theater in his students. Because of this, I've been able to see several excellent plays in the past few years, including "The Diary of Anne Frank." Astin's "Once Upon a Midnight" is, without a doubt, the best performance I've seen. I had to remind myself that Poe was not actually on the stage. I'm so happy that I will have another opportunity to see his incredible performance here at Hopkins in April.

At birth we are given a vast aray of emotions. We feel certain ones at different times of our lives. But on rare occations, we are flooded with all of these emotions, in one, very short period of time. This is what John Astin has accomplished, in his portrayal of Edger Allen Poe. I felt happy, I smiled or laughed. I felt fear, I grasp for air or jumped. I felt sad, I felt Mr Poe's pain, I wept. I felt Mr.Poe's presence. I would like to thank Mr. Astin and everyone else who participated in creating this wonderful play. I also want to thank Mr. Astin for his autograph, and for coming to State Fair Comunity College, in Sedalia Missouri. Is there a video of this great performance? If so I would to have the information needed to obtain one. From the bottom of my heart I again thank you.

"Eureka"-I had no idea! And his work as a critic! I'm overwhelmed to understand him better as a man instead of possible maniac, as others have said. I must finish my book. Again, thank you.

I was fortunate enough to see "Once Upon a Midnight" in Fayetteville, AR (1/20/01) and be one of the handful able to meet Mr. Astin afterwards. In my modesty and excitement, I forgot to ask him to thank the crew for bringing this play to be-I now thank you all for everything involved in the theatre experience-your expertise and patience is appreciated. As to Mr. Astin, I thank you for being so polite and concerned with your audience, fans, and potential fans. You gave us a wonderful experience never to be forgotten and I bless you. You signed my copy of Poe's works and discussed the name of Ethan in your family-you also spoke to my little brother Johnathan & his wife Valisha with much consideration. In Johnathan's modesty and excitement, he forgot to share with you his seriously budding interest in the theatre, directing, playwriting, etc. He's not long out of highschool, during which he did some serious work in the theatre, and wanted your opinion and suggestions. Looking back, he decided it best not to have bothered you any further, knowing you had rest and more work ahead of you. We both say that today's world, we must appreciate and enjoy those who are kind to us-you have brought much entertainment to our lives and bring a smile each time we see you work. We feel you are a kind, deep, and very interesting person and hope your tours go well and comforting. We send blessings to your wife who could not be with you in Fayetteville, and well wishes be to you and yours forever-farewell.

What a stirring portrayal of this tortured soul was witnessed last evening at the Walton Arts Center, Fayetteville, Arkansas! All aspects of the show were flawlessly and lovingly executed, leaving the impression that the incredible John Astin is not the only one who has poured his heart and soul into the production of this play. As expected, Mr. Astin's portrayal of E.A. Poe gives glorious insight into not just the writer, but the man; and carries one very willingly into an examination of the life experiences behind the works. **Thank you, Mr. Astin, for being so gracious as to speak with those who waited to meet you, and for being so kind about signing autographs. You are an extraordinary actor! Best wishes to Valerie; she was missed.**

BRAVO! I've been a fan of Poe's writings since I was a young child and never realized just how brilliant E.A. Poe was -- until you gave a sample of the 'lecture' based on the one Poe book/novel I never heard of. The man was a visionary and far, far ahead of his time. "Eureka" is now on my list of books to attempt to locate. Please, feel free to bring Once Upon a Midnight back to this part of the world anytime -- I'll be there, applauding loudly from the balcony.

Dear John: We saw your presentation in Norwell,MA in '98.Fantastic ! The highlight for me was your rendition of M. Valdemar.Hope you return to Boston area for an encore. I have always loved Poe and Gothic literature. I grew up 2 miles from Sarah Helen Whitman's old homestead in Pembroke. I am delighted to hear that the beloved Gomez Addams of my youth is a Poe scholar. I am currently finishing a book entitled Lovecraft's Lit- erary Conscience which includes many comparisons with Poe. My premise is that Gothic Art is a function of conscience. Poe's inset quote to "Wiliam Wison" among other things, indicated that he well understood this principle. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and will even run my manuscript by you for comments/criticism if you have time. Thanks for your many years of theatrecraft. God Bless, Ed Birchmore

I witnessed the play a few years back and it was terrific. In my view though, it was simply a chance to dramatize the great works of the master rather than truly reveal an imaginative portrayal of his mysterious death. Nothing could be a riper circumstance for a tale of detection that, ironically, Poe himself would have jumped at, for a creative solution to the missing 5 days. I myself have penned such a tale in homage to the revered genius. In January, Dark Star publications will publish an anthology 'Twilight Antiquities' with my tale included at the following URL. Lest you fear solicitation, if someone doesn't wish to pay the few dollars for the ebook, I will glady furnish a free copy of my ms. for the sole price of a reaction. Sorry for being long winded but I'm a Poe fanatic and often get carried away with the 'fever of living' where EAP is concerned. Most assuredly yours, Greg Seitz Esq.,

John Astin is darkly wonderful in his performance as Poe. I've seen Once Upon a Midnight twice, and each time I came away with a new appreciation and understanding of Poe. The writing is fantastic, moving and of course Astin IS Poe. Thank you for a great performance and a terrific production. Lori PS My husband and I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Astin after his recent performance in Brea, CA. He is a gracious, interesting man and we wish him great success.

Every year the Fresno County Library has a literary dinner. Each table has an author or subject as a theme. This year I have chosen Edgar Allan Poe as my table theme. I was able to find a great deal of information from the Edgar Allan Poe Society. I wish I had been able to attend "Once upon a midnight" before the dinner party. Will the play be traveling to the Central Valley any time soon? What is the tour's schedule?

As a mom, I was glad I could drive some children from St.Irenaeus School to Servite High School to see the play on Oct. 31, 2000. We were fortunate to get the front row seats. Our St. Irenaeus children behaved well, and I am proud of them for that. The high school children were a bad example, but they seemed to listen most of the time. They got a bit loud at times. I was glad to be up front where I could here every word and see every expression from John Astin. I enjoyed the play very much. John Astin is a great actor and teacher! Thank you John.

We are sorry we didn't have chance to visit (time is running out), but, of course, didn't expect you would be free. When can I see the piece on PBS? I meant it when I made the invitation for you and Valorie to come to San Bernardino, either for an overnight or just for dinner. Any time of the week is okay for old retirees. Regards, Slout

Just learned of your play from CBS Sunday Morning on Oct. 29, 2000. I live in Cincinnati, OH and Elmira Royster Shelton was my great, great, great grandmother. I am from Richmond, VA and her daughter married my great great grandfather. It was neat to see and learn about the theory of his death when he was engaged to her. Will the play ever tour the midwest? I enjoyed your website and would love to see the play!

I saw it in Albuquerque on Oct. 20, 2000, and I loved it. I was hoping to get the script so that some of my students in speech and debate could use some pieces for dramatic interpretations in competition. I think that this would make a great piece for them to use and to win in competition. Please let me know what I can possibly do to get a script. Thank you very much.

I saw John Astin perform "once Upon a Midnight" October 20 at Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque. It was outstanding. I have been a huge Poe fan for many year, and Astin portrayed him perfectly. If I didn't know Poe has been dead for quite some time, I would have thought that to be Poe on the stage. John, surely very exhausted from his incredible performance, still took time after the play to sign autographs, and was extremely friendly to every single person who wanted something signed. He is a great actor, and a great human being. And I feel priviliged to have seen him perform.

He is a very exceptional performer and actor. He does a great job in portraying great people. I'm an SGI member and I just felt so connected when I saw him play that night. I hope that he will perform in the South Bay area again, soon.

Hello, We saw John Astin in Albuquerque on Friday last, and loved his performance. Mr. Astin has been a hero of mine since the early 1960s, when "The Addams Family" was mandatory television viewing, and I saved nickles to buy "Addams Family" trading cards! I am thrilled and pleased that he is still entertaining the public. What a guy! I have written a feature film screenplay caled "Accidental Heaven" which features a role that I believe would be ideal for Mr. Astin. The character is a god, even "The" God, and his slightly zany, ironic, yet loving character would suit Mr. Astin perfectly. You can feel free to visit www.screen-writer.com; I would also like to submit the screenplay to Mr. Astin or his representatives, as I am sure he would enjoy reading it and would make a perfect match for the leading role. May I submit this screenplay to Mr. Astin? Thanks and regards, Steven Salemi Santa Fe, New Mexico www.screen-writer.com

I have just read "The Tell-Tale Heart". I wonder why does Poe's description of the "evil eye" of the old man fascinate you? Do you feel the narrator is telling the truth when he blames the eye for his obsession and his crime? What effect and significance is achieved by juxtaposing these two "eyes," one mechanical, one natural? What does each come to symbolize? Why is the soud of the old man's heart particularly disturbng to the narrator? How does he describe it, both before and after the killing? Why does he compare its sound to that of a watch? a lot of questions.... sorry about that thx a lot... =)

I got to see Midnight in Somerville, NJ. I knew that John Astin would be wonderful but I was amazed by the beautifully written play itself. Astin has many talents but, to me, his gift is his comic timing. He and the play were a perfect match. Thanks so much for bringing it to a small town like Somerville.

My husband, his mother, and I saw the show last night and we all enjoyed it tremendously. Thank you for a splendid experience! I fell in love with Poe's work as a child (after being forbidden to read such "morbid and frightening stuff" I, of course, read as much of it as I could get my hands on!)but I had never heard of "Eureka." Now I have some "new" Poe to discover!

Dear John, It was a pleasure meeting you at your performance at St. Peter's Church last Wednesday. I was truly moved by your performance as Poe, and pleased to hear that you were familiar with my book. I'm happy to report that during the Edgar Awards my colleagues and I were able to accumulate over 300 signatures in our petition drive to save Edgar Allan Poe's house from being demolished by NYU. The petition will be presented this Wednesday, May 10th at a public hearing to determine the fate of the house. I don't know if you will still be in New York at that time, it would be wonderful--and highly effective-- if you would, as a representative of MWA present, these petitions to the community board which is holding the hearing. I realize your schedule may not allow this but if by chance you are available, please by all means let me know. My phone number is: 718-852-5630. And once, again, it was a truly a pleasure to meet you. Michael Deas P.S. While I'm in New York, you can reach me at a friend's e-mail address: myscontent@aol.com.

Dear John or whoever reads this, Enjoyed your performence very much at the Adelaide fringe/festival in march. We did not know what to expect,we were in some ways shell shocked at the power of your performance and how you are able to remember all those lines and reciting the Raven was outstanding,I had never heard of it before but my wife did and of course we have been delving into the life of E A poe ever since. We read an article in the readers digest recently, about a medical specialist given the case notes of a dead person and his job was to come up with cause of death and was not told of who the person was,any way to cut a long story short he came to the conclusion that the person died of Rabies and then was told it was edgar Allan poe!!You can be bitten 12 months or more before symtoms appear and there is no frothing at the mouth so they say. All the best to john Astin he came across to us as a very good actor and a good bloke as well. Philip & Sue macdonald

having just found this site, i must add my voice to the quite amazing responses from other people who saw this wonderful performance in adelaide. I have always loved Poe, his work touches me like no other writer. As i have always been the "weird one", no matter who i am with, his poem "alone", touches me like nothing i have ever heard, after all these years, it still makes me cry. It was so wonderful to hear that, and so many of his other stunning works, recited by one of the most outstanding performers i have ever seen. Thank you so very much to all who are involved in this beautiful piece of theatre. Please return to Adelaide, we would all love it dearly.

I saw this play last year in Indianapolis at the Pike Performing Arts Center. I only heard about it through a friend, and was afraid that it was too late to purchase tickets. To my delight, it was not, and my friend and I went to see it, breathless with excitemnet. I was not sure what to expect, but I was blown away by the outstanding performance! It is a special person who appreciates Poe, but Astin went above and beyond. The story was magnificently orchestrated, and the acting was superb. The play certainly dispelled common misconceptions about the genius that was Poe, and I found it very tasteful. I sat, spellbound, and every time Astin began to resite a poem, I mouthed the words with him, almost choking with my excitement. I would recommend this production to "Poe-fans" and non-fans alike! It is exilerating for the viewers who are familiar with Poe, and it sheds some light on the mystery for those who do not know his work. Thank you for providing a site so that I may follow the show and perhaps view it again sometime.... Sincerely thankful

Dear Mr Astin/Poe I saw you on stage twice in Adelaide for the fringe festival. I was so moved and touched by your proformance that i swear i was sitting across from Mr Poe himself. You Sir have given my the passion to explore Mr Poe's work. Soooooo...my mother gave me the complete works of E.A.Poe(after bugging her for days of how much i enjoyed you on stage.)and i have memorized The Raven,Anna Bell Lee and Alone. I am curently studing poetry at school and i write some myself. Thankyou so much to indroducing me to the best poetry ever written. When I was watching you proform i almost forgot you had played Gomez in The Addams Family(stigma)and now every time i hear the name John Astin i will be reminded of the man who gave E.A.Poe final justice by showing the world he was a true legend. Thanks again Melanie John S.A P.S I was sitting front row centre both times i came to see you and it was a real eye opener.:)

John your performance was wonderful, I was crying my eyes out at the end of the show (the last show you did in Adelaide). We gave you a standing ovation, you were great. I have NEVER been so moved by a performance before. Thankyou so much for putting all that work into it, all I can do is thank you.

Hello, My name is Grant Peterson and I'm studying at UCLA and am currently in rehersal for Bradbury's "Farenheit 451" (at the end of the show the main protagonist becomes Edgar Allan Poe). I'm research Poe as much as I can. I greatly appreciated the web site for the Poe Show (excuse my abbreviation). It was very easy to navigate and it helped me in providing many rich sources to look into. However, I wish I would have found your site sooner so I could have seen your show when it was in Pasedena. But I didn't find the website until today (Mar. 28) :( If you happen to return to LA to perform for any reason, Please contact me. Also, if you know of any videos I could rent that portray or examine Poe, please contact me as well. I have already ordered the Biography Special on him. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time and effort, Sincerely, Grant Peterson

Dear Mr. John Astin, I saw you show last friday the 17th of March at the Adelaide Festival. I would like to thank you for a briliant performance. I sat there spell bound, watching and listening to you deliver the show. It is fantastic to have people of your calibre come to Adeliade to perform, I hope that you may come to our town again so as I can see you perform once again.

 Enjoyed the show thank you,

I saw the play during its run as part of the Adelaide Festival. I can't find words to say what I thought, or the impression it left me with, though one word keeps coming back to me... mesmerising. Thank you, Mr. Astin, for a night I will never forget.

I was so inspired by Astin's portrayal of Edgar Allan Poe that I went home and looked up many of his works. John Astin was brilliant and he is someone that I would like to meet. I was enchanted by this show.
