Will a video recording of the production be made and available for purchase or Nevermore? Thanks for any information you can give me. |

With experience lacking and not having the opportunity to see many stage shows, I still think it safe to say that we experienced an extroardinary performance. We are still discussing the this and thats of Poe's life, with special interest in his work Eureka, which was new to us. My brother is already looking for Poe material. Anyway, Thank you for sharing your talent with us. This performance will certainly go unmatched!!Bravo!! |

Having grown up watching you in The Addams Family, along with all your many guest appearances, and in recent years on The Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr., I was anxious to finally see you perform in person. I was not disappointed. On the contrary, I have attended many dramas over the years, but none has even come close to comparing with your performance of Poe's life and works. I've long been a fan of Poe, so this this was a double delight. I was fortunate to be able to share your work with a high school student who is involved in a Poe class project. She was thrilled with the insight you gave her into his life. No amount of reading could have done what you were able to do in about two hours. Please know that your show is awesome and second to none. I hope to be able to see it again someday, to catch the parts that slipped by so quickly. Thank you for a truly incredible evening. (I would also be interested in a video, if available.) Sincerely, P. Anderson, Jasper, Indiana |

Everyone hung on every word Mr. Astin said. He was wonderful! He made Edgar Allan Poe come to life, and I would go to see him again and again given the opportunity. I also was able to meet him after the show. I have met several celebrities in my lifetime, and never one so intelligent and kind. I think he would have sat down and had coffee with us given the time. Thank you John for a wonderful evening we will never forget! Sincerely, Norma |

I had been looking forward to it for months, and I have to say that it was well worth the wait. Magnificent is hardly an adequate word to describe the performance. Spellbinding is not strong enough to describe the effect on the audience. My only regret is that I was not able to watch it again. Before I had reached my car I knew that I had just seen something extraordinary but I was unable to recall an entire sentence of any of it. I would like to see it again. I would also hope that at some time in the future the play would be available in book form for those of us with short-term memory lapses. |

Because of this, I've been able to see several excellent plays in the past few years, including "The Diary of Anne Frank." But on rare occations, we are flooded with all of these emotions, in one, very short period of time. This is what John Astin has accomplished, in his portrayal of Edger Allen Poe. I felt happy, I smiled or laughed. I felt fear, I grasp for air or jumped. I felt sad, I felt Mr Poe's pain, I wept. I felt Mr.Poe's presence. I would like to thank Mr. Astin and everyone else who participated in creating this wonderful play. I also want to thank Mr. Astin for his autograph, and for coming to State Fair Comunity College, in Sedalia Missouri. Is there a video of this great performance? In my modesty and excitement, I forgot to ask him to thank the crew for bringing this play to be-I now thank you all for everything involved in the theatre experience-your expertise and patience is appreciated. As to Mr. Astin, I thank you for being so polite and concerned with your audience, fans, and potential fans. You gave us a wonderful experience never to be forgotten and I bless you. You signed my copy of Poe's works and discussed the name of Ethan in your family-you also spoke to my little brother Johnathan & his wife Valisha with much consideration. In Johnathan's modesty and excitement, he forgot to share with you his seriously budding interest in the theatre, directing, playwriting, etc. He's not long out of highschool, during which he did some serious work in the theatre, and wanted your opinion and suggestions. Looking back, he decided it best not to have bothered you any further, knowing you had rest and more work ahead of you. We both say that today's world, we must appreciate and enjoy those who are kind to us-you have brought much entertainment to our lives and bring a smile each time we see you work. We feel you are a kind, deep, and very interesting person and hope your tours go well and comforting. We send blessings to your wife who could not be with you in Fayetteville, and well wishes be to you and yours forever-farewell. |

All aspects of the show were flawlessly and lovingly executed, leaving the impression that the incredible John Astin is not the only one who has poured his heart and soul into the production of this play. As expected, Mr. Astin's portrayal of E.A. I grew up 2 miles from Sarah Helen Whitman's old homestead in Pembroke. I am delighted to hear that the beloved Gomez Addams of my youth is a Poe scholar. I am currently finishing a book entitled Lovecraft's Lit- erary Conscience which includes many comparisons with Poe. My premise is that Gothic Art is a function of conscience. Poe's inset quote to "Wiliam Wison" among other things, indicated that he well understood this principle. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and will even run my manuscript by you for comments/criticism if you have time. Thanks for your many years of theatrecraft. God Bless, Ed Birchmore |

In my view though, it was simply a chance to dramatize the great works of the master rather than truly reveal an imaginative portrayal of his mysterious death. Nothing could be a riper circumstance for a tale of detection that, ironically, Poe himself would have jumped at, for a creative solution to the missing 5 days. I myself have penned such a tale in homage to the revered genius. In January, Dark Star publications will publish an anthology 'Twilight Antiquities' with my tale included at the following URL. Lest you fear solicitation, if someone doesn't wish to pay the few dollars for the ebook, I will glady furnish a free copy of my ms. for the sole price of a reaction. Sorry for being long winded but I'm a Poe fanatic and often get carried away with the 'fever of living' where EAP is concerned. Most assuredly yours, Greg Seitz Esq., |

I've seen Once Upon a Midnight twice, and each time I came away with a new appreciation and understanding of Poe. The writing is fantastic, moving and of course Astin IS Poe. Thank you for a great performance and a terrific production. Lori PS My husband and I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Astin after his recent performance in Brea, CA. He is a gracious, interesting man and we wish him great success. |

Each table has an author or subject as a theme. This year I have chosen Edgar Allan Poe as my table theme. I was able to find a great deal of information from the Edgar Allan Poe Society. I wish I had been able to attend "Once upon a midnight" before the dinner party. Will the play be traveling to the Central Valley any time soon? What is the tour's schedule? |

We were fortunate to get the front row seats. Our St. Irenaeus children behaved well, and I am proud of them for that. The high school children were a bad example, but they seemed to listen most of the time. They got a bit loud at times. I was glad to be up front where I could here every word and see every expression from John Astin. I enjoyed the play very much. John Astin is a great actor and teacher! Thank you John. |

It was outstanding. I have been a huge Poe fan for many year, and Astin portrayed him perfectly. If I didn't know Poe has been dead for quite some time, I would have thought that to be Poe on the stage. John, surely very exhausted from his incredible performance, still took time after the play to sign autographs, and was extremely friendly to every single person who wanted something signed. He is a great actor, and a great human being. And I feel priviliged to have seen him perform. |

Mr. Astin has been a hero of mine since the early 1960s, when "The Addams Family" was mandatory television viewing, and I saved nickles to buy "Addams Family" trading cards! I am thrilled and pleased that he is still entertaining the public. What a guy! I have written a feature film screenplay caled "Accidental Heaven" which features a role that I believe would be ideal for Mr. Astin. The character is a god, even "The" God, and his slightly zany, ironic, yet loving character would suit Mr. Astin perfectly. You can feel free to visit www.screen-writer.com; I would also like to submit the screenplay to Mr. Astin or his representatives, as I am sure he would enjoy reading it and would make a perfect match for the leading role. May I submit this screenplay to Mr. Astin? Thanks and regards, Steven Salemi Santa Fe, New Mexico www.screen-writer.com |

I wonder why does Poe's description of the "evil eye" of the old man fascinate you? Do you feel the narrator is telling the truth when he blames the eye for his obsession and his crime? What effect and significance is achieved by juxtaposing these two "eyes," one mechanical, one natural? What does each come to symbolize? Why is the soud of the old man's heart particularly disturbng to the narrator? How does he describe it, both before and after the killing? Why does he compare its sound to that of a watch? a lot of questions.... sorry about that thx a lot... =) |

I knew that John Astin would be wonderful but I was amazed by the beautifully written play itself. Astin has many talents but, to me, his gift is his comic timing. He and the play were a perfect match. Thanks so much for bringing it to a small town like Somerville. |

I was truly moved by your performance as Poe, and pleased to hear that you were familiar with my book. I'm happy to report that during the Edgar Awards my colleagues and I were able to accumulate over 300 signatures in our petition drive to save Edgar Allan Poe's house from being demolished by NYU. The petition will be presented this Wednesday, May 10th at a public hearing to determine the fate of the house. I don't know if you will still be in New York at that time, it would be wonderful--and highly effective-- if you would, as a representative of MWA present, these petitions to the community board which is holding the hearing. I realize your schedule may not allow this but if by chance you are available, please by all means let me know. My phone number is: 718-852-5630. And once, again, it was a truly a pleasure to meet you. Michael Deas P.S. While I'm in New York, you can reach me at a friend's e-mail address: myscontent@aol.com. |

We read an article in the readers digest recently, about a medical specialist given the case notes of a dead person and his job was to come up with cause of death and was not told of who the person was,any way to cut a long story short he came to the conclusion that the person died of Rabies and then was told it was edgar Allan poe!!You can be bitten 12 months or more before symtoms appear and there is no frothing at the mouth so they say. All the best to john Astin he came across to us as a very good actor and a good bloke as well. Philip & Sue macdonald |

I only heard about it through a friend, and was afraid that it was too late to purchase tickets. To my delight, it was not, and my friend and I went to see it, breathless with excitemnet. I was not sure what to expect, but I was blown away by the outstanding performance! It is a special person who appreciates Poe, but Astin went above and beyond. The story was magnificently orchestrated, and the acting was superb. The play certainly dispelled common misconceptions about the genius that was Poe, and I found it very tasteful. I sat, spellbound, and every time Astin began to resite a poem, I mouthed the words with him, almost choking with my excitement. I would recommend this production to "Poe-fans" and non-fans alike! It is exilerating for the viewers who are familiar with Poe, and it sheds some light on the mystery for those who do not know his work. Thank you for providing a site so that I may follow the show and perhaps view it again sometime.... Sincerely thankful |

I'm research Poe as much as I can. I greatly appreciated the web site for the Poe Show (excuse my abbreviation). It was very easy to navigate and it helped me in providing many rich sources to look into. However, I wish I would have found your site sooner so I could have seen your show when it was in Pasedena. But I didn't find the website until today (Mar. 28) :( If you happen to return to LA to perform for any reason, Please contact me. Also, if you know of any videos I could rent that portray or examine Poe, please contact me as well. I have already ordered the Biography Special on him. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time and effort, Sincerely, Grant Peterson |

Though I was familiar with his fiction and poetry, I'd not encountered Poe's philosophy before. Huge thanks to Paul Day Clemens, Ron Magid, Alan Bergmann and the ever-marvellous John Astin for leading me up a new garden path... I'm looking forward to exploring! The venue, Arts Theatre, is a small, plain, unfashionable theatre much overlooked as a comfortable well laid out theatre with excellent accoustics. It's slightly shabby appearance well suits the tragic poverty of Poe's existance. The writing, staging, direction and lighting are all superb. But it is Astin who is the greatest asset to this play. His depth and range provide a rivetting night's entertainment. How fortunate I am to have seen such a marvellous production. |

I was very impressed by the way Mr. Astin portrayed Mr. Poe. I felt as if I was actually watching Mr. Poe talk about his life. The drama & emotion that Mr. Astin put into his performance was inspiring. I highly recommend that if anyone has the chance to see this play, they do so. I would go again. I really had a great time. I always knew that Mr. Astin was very talented. But this was without a doubt his best performance ever. I just wish I could have gotten his autograph. I have always been a big Poe fan, But now I feel as if I really know him. Mr. Astin thank you for a wonderful night that I will never forget. You brought joy to my life while I watched you. And that is a gift that I will never forget. Thank You, Gail Huscher |

John Astin gave an inspired performance that evening so much so in fact that I truly believed Poe's ghost possessed his body for the few hours we shared together. What I saw on stage was not an actor performing a part but Americas greatest poet miraculously returned from the etherial to correct an injustice and dispel all the lies and myths about his life. Mr Astin has reached a level of excellence in his craft that is quite rare and few have achieved it in their lifetimes. The depth of his performance was so intense that the actor and man became one and Poe was with us again for an night of enlightenment , amusement and sadness. Mr Astin on a personal note I wish to thank you for the wonderful gift you gave me that evening in addition to your outstanding performance by taking the time after the play to autograph my poster. It was a geniune pleasure to have the opportunity meet you and also listen to your insights on Poe especially concerning his masterwork Eureka. I have always enjoyed your work in television ie; The Addams Family , Night Court , Erie Indiana , and Brisco County to name just a few and whatever the venue it is always better because you are in it. |

I very much enjoyed talking to Mr. Astin afterwards. I am the composer in Des Moines whose work "Five Poems of Edgar Allan Poe" was premiered by the Des Moines Symphony on Oct. 30! I now know why Allan is Mr. Poe's middle name. I now know where the Mask of the Red Death comes from and what a sad relationship Mr. Poe had with his step-father and in the end how Mr. Astin proclaims that he loved his step-father - something I didn't expect but very moving!! Brillant to say the least! I expected to be entertained because I have always loved John Astin but I didn't expect to get the bonus of education! Mr. Astin, I get very flustered around actors I've admired and respected since childhood, but I wanted to tell you how much your performance moved me. I only hope you'll do this again in a few years when my daughter will be better able to appreciate it. Being a writer, this play held special meaning for me. I've always been afraid to even try to get published for fear of rejection. It certainly puts things in perspective when you learn about the struggles and rejections of artists such as Poe! And your acting, Mr. Astin, was phenomenal! I don't know anyone who could have better portrayed him. Thank you, and thank you for the autographs after the show. This time, I'll actually remember to tell you my name. For 2 hours I sat in the theater mesmerized by THE Edgar Allen Poe. It was as if the man himself was standing before me. I'm not just talking about Mr. Astin's uncanny resemblance to the poet, but his entire persona. He was able to vocalize the wit and melancholy of Poe's writings and blend the seemlessly in the show, which left me in tears. Mr. Astin's recitation of "The Raven" is equal to that of a Pavarotti aria. His performance well surpasses any I've seen on the Broadway stage in the past few years, and I hope that this show can find a home there, soon. I say this mainly out of selfishness, because if the show were to remain in NY, I would attend it regularly bringing family and friends to many performances. There really isn't enough that I can say about "Once Upon a Midnight" and I hope that the tour has continued success. Matt. Murray |

Truly, you have discovered the spirit of America's greatest master of literary expression; and, in your miraculous personal transformation, have restored Poe as a living and feeling artist of the highest order. You have banished forever the vague, corrupted, and false ghost that has been allowed for too long to stand in for the authentic Poe. I should like to take this opportunity, too, to thank you for the pleasure you have given me for over thirty years through your absolutely magnificent comic performances on television and in films, starting with your warm and vital portrayal of Gomez in "The Addams Family" (your unworthy successors in that role have offered up merely lukewarm caricatures). I hope that "Once Upon a Midnight" will be preserved on film or videotape, and made available commercially. I urge the "webmaster" of this site to include information in this regard when appropriate. If, at times, you feel a sensation of inexplicable warmth, you may be certain that it is Poe, smiling upon you in gratitude and friendship. Yours Most Sincerely, Philip Colston P.S. I should be quite remiss were I not to thank you for so kindly consenting, after your prodigious and no doubt exhausting performance, to autograph my poster. I have been fond of you since The Adams Family (Boo The Munsters, a tacky rip-off!) and I have been fond of where Poe goes since I first read him in Grade Three--in Grade Five I tried to do a Book Report on him, but my teacher said I could not; he didn't feel Poe was "suitable." A B.A., M.A., and D.A. later, I have been told (during international conferences) that Poe and Mark Twain are the only American writers WORTH reading. Keep it up!!! There are True Believers out hereŠ |

I want to say that Mr. Astin has given us a masterful performance that should not be missed. What I was "mesmerized" by was his ability to link events of Edgar's life to his works. This performance gave an insight to the man that no book can convey. I have already called two people and recommend that they go see this wonderful performer! |

Although the only two kids I saw there were my 12 & 9-year olds, they enjoyed your performance immensely. Philip, the 12 year-old, had done areport on Poe last year, so the play made what he had studied flow. My daughter squirmed at the beginning, but when I explained some of the imagery to her, (the red death, the blackness of John Allen, and especially, Poe's "Tell-Tale Heart"-murder of John Allen at the dining table(!)), her attention was rapt, and she was quick on her feet for the ovation, and to apologize for badgering me at the beginning of the play! I'm sure you realize that the greatest things in life are measured in the smallest glimpses, such as seeing the love of learning encompassing children through flawless entertainment. Congratulations, Mr. Astin, on a job expertly done. Sincerely, Alison G Stratigis |

I have not had the opportunity to see the play (I live in Miami), but being well acquainted with the Poe iconography (sparse as it is) I was highly impressed by the photos of Mr. Astin in character. "Eerie likeness" would be a redundant term to use when Poe is the subject! But it shows the actor's ability to adapt facial gestures and attitude to the subject at hand. I first noticed Mr. Astin in West Side Story in 1961 and in a brief t.v. sitcom in which he starred with Shirley Jones' recently divorced husband. I am glad to see him closer to his classic theatrical roots. I've seen Hal Holbrook as Mark Twain and would hope to see Mr. Astin as Poe. Does the production plan to be in Florida any time in the future? |

John Astin recaptured the spirit of a man who has all but lost in the ages, but never forgotten, mind you. He painted a world in vermillion and gold, a portrait that instantly enraptured my heart and soul. He provided the auidence with a slice of Poe's life so realistically and cunningly retold, that, enthralled, all wished to be locked in this performance and moment of time, forever. In his finale of Poe's harrowing tale, he left the crowd breathless, on the verge of jumping from their seats and crying out "NO! Poe do not die, do not suffer again." In his exploration of a mysterious man, Astin has sparked a light into many souls, a light that will harbor the memory of a man named Poe. |

Someone at work gave me a copy of the Anaheim schedule of events and I called immediately for tickets. What a great show! Mr. Astin gave an inspired performance, the more so for having to be such a trouper through constant technical problems. My husband, an actor, lamented all the way home that he should have started applauding after the energetic reading of "The Raven" and felt guilty for days, but hoped that the standing ovation the audience gave at the conclusion showed Mr. Astin the appreciation he deserved. Wonderfully written, with both comedy and pathos, I would recommend it and hope to see it at a larger venue someday. Thank you, Mr. Astin, for a lovely visit with Mr. Poe. |

Email: cookgm@laccd.cc.ca.us Added: Tuesday, July 27, 1999 1:35 PM 207.233.48.250 Comments: Saw Once Upon a Midnight last Saturday in Anaheim. I've got to say that I entered thinking that this may well be "EDUCATIONAL" (read "boring...but something we're required to pretend we like). NOT SO! John Astin brought us into the dark night of the poet's soul...not just Poe's soul but, by extension the tortured collective soul of every creative personality trying to maintain a bit of honor and integrity in this most commercial of nations. Poe (and, most importantly, Astin's superb interpretation) shows us in the most heartbreaking manner that the role of the truly creative personality is as undervalued as ever in the world of commerce. I think my favorite scene was when Poe wheedles a short interview with the President of the United States in order to secure a small civil service gig and can't resist trying to sell him a magazine subscription. Naturally the President throws him out. The scene is comical but at the same time tells us that when the artist tries to make compromises...to "play the game"...he's doomed to go down in flames. Nothing was wasted in the play. Every phrase stood on its own merits while simultaneously working as allegory. I was sitting up front and noted that John Astin was wearing little facial makeup (with the exception of darkened hair and mustache)yet, within minutes this senior citizen made us think we were looking at a man in his 30s. This is acting at its best!! Astin's vocal tone was consistently raised an octave...no mean feat in a 2 hour one-man performance...which made him more youthful and,at the same time, drove out any temptations on the part of the audience to find any hints of Gomez Adams. Quite impressive. Sincere and heartfelt congratulations J.A.! |

Despite cursory knowledge of his renown, I never thought to consider Poe's importance in American literature or history as significant, until I saw Mr. Astin's performance. Mr. Astin, you have most certainly accomplished your goal of helping others to see Poe's depth and significance. My wife and I will always remember the pleasure we had in seeing you on stage in Anaheim, and rest assured we will never regard Poe's work with the same indifference we have up to now. Thanks again for showing us the true Poe! |

Poe (my favorite since childhood), $5.00, what could you lose? By 10:30 p.m. Saturday, all I could think was how unfortunate it would have been had we missed your performance. You were E.A. Poe. John Astin's magnificence as an actor was counterbalanced by his humble gesture of shaking hands and saying hello to the dozens of people waiting in line to view the performance of a lifetime. John Astin in concert with Edgar Allen Poe infected my spirit with an uncanny, profound energy that defies precise articulation. It relegated the Twilight Zone to a hypnogogic foyer in the television depiction of the human condition, and the Addams Family to the simple status of being the best vaudeville spoof of the macabre that ever graced the picture tube. John Astin had more to communicate, and by his speech and his nonverbal communication he convinced me that we should transcend the heartbreak of life by channeling the energy of agony into an obsession to bury the myth of our inability to exploit the magnificent power and theatre of our eternal collective existence. |
| Name: Scott M Connolly
Email: scottmconnolly@yahoo.com Added: Tuesday, February 9, 1999 11:08 AM 204.164.215.141 Comments: "Once Upon a Midnight Dreary …" Now touring nationally a Baltimore native does another hometown icon well by a superb one man play (2 acts) about the life of Edgar Allen Poe. Bal'mer reaised John Astin, best know for his and almost stereotyped for his role of Gomez in the Addams family; takes a venture into the mystical and macabre world of the noted American writer and poet, Poe. Acclaimed a 'Prince of American letters at his death in 1849, his death was somewhat a mystery (he died intoxicated or mugged in Baltimore with no convincing or conclusive story of his demise). Choosing a traditional route of many one man formats … the somewhat biographical play joins the man's life and letters as if Poe returned to relate personally what, in one of his many lifetime lectures and recitals - happened at his death. His childhood and loss of parents to pervasive consumption (tuberculosis) became a persistent theme as well as the root for a search for security and order in domesticity. The "red demons"are nightmares of his father, mother and other family members bloodied by their tubercular cough (hacking) and the plays themes thus balances his need for family structure against his artistic life and many deprivations. Macabre enough to be "u'kuoiye" his short stories inspirations play themselves from his life, and are candidly interepated as art and mercantile need (his works sold) and his own self-exploration. Rather than bathe in tragedy, Astin plays Poe as an explorer cum disciplined literary artist. He has mastered short stories and prosaic fiction and exposition for the commercial press and then classical poetry (this reviewer wonders the lack of Tamerlane"). But the well known pieces are there his romantic laments in "Raven" and "Leonore"; the hint of cryptography (from his military experiences) in the Gold Bug. Astin and playwright join the audience to them with the Spartan set and bring the audience to the last days of the artists life. The final mystery rises, when debt and family laden he explores existences with mysticism turned cosmological philosophical science, worthy of the amateur conceptions of HG Wells, and budding astro-physicists today in his lesser published work Eureka It diverted him from other work and holds the key s to his young ecstatic parting from life Whether mugged or dead by intoxication .. the artists could ponder no longer and needed the door through death! Well done playwriting and fine acting do the rest … don't read too much ahead of time … Astin's delivery of verse at first becomes the tenor of Poe's excitable mania and probably was the writer's true nature at lecture. The "Raven" can be over-dramatized Astin does his excerpted interpretation of it as Poe probably wrote it … somewhat tremulous … a little pannicked … but sure of his ground … his form. And "Tamerlane" (Another search for order and security … like reasons for life?) Seen at the newly rejoined City Stage in Springfield, Ma 02/06/99 (Saturday SRO sell out) the successor on premises to the old Stage West. |
